The final for my first class learning how to use Unreal, the gaming Engine. I find the layering of various forms of digital media in virtual reality to be particularly interesting, working with the 2D in the 3D so this was a concept I wanted to explore in this piece. 7 Gates was inspired by an old Babylonian myth about the descent of the goddess Inanna into the underworld. She must pass through 7 gates to encounter her sister in the underworld. In each gate she must give up an item of clothing rich in symbolism to make it to the next.

The Nude Museum is a series of curated interactive virtual reality exhibitions that showcase a private collection of nude photography in the desert, on mars, and in a gallery setting.
The Nude Museum is an exploration into how we can view and engage with art that is not physically displayed. Whether it is art in a private collection or in a museum’s storage, the reality is that most art lives in boxes and in warehouses. Virtual reality provides an experience of viewing the art itself that lies somewhere between seeing it in person and seeing it as a jpeg on a 2D screen.
The Nude Museum is a prototype that is part tool/part art piece that places a curated exhibition of a private collection of nude photography in various environments in virtual reality. It adds an otherworldly layer where the photos are curated with their environment and the experience is interactive.
Approaching a photo triggers an audio story about the piece, by the artist, their gallerist or from someone knowledgeable about it. It emulates the feeling of hearing about a piece from somebody first hand. Its conversational tone creates an enhanced viewing experience that makes the art more accessible and allows the viewer to connect on a deeper level with the work through stories. It is informative and surreal.
You have the opportunity to get closer to the art and really study it in a way that isn’t possible in a real museum. There are three different exhibitions of the collection in The Nude Museum, one in the desert, one on Mars, and one in a traditional museum setting.
No Exit is a multimedia VR piece exploring the idea of simulation theory. Using 360 video embedded in the Unreal gaming engine it imagines a dystopian future in today’s current volatile political climate. It uses the limitations of VR, where the real, 360 video, appears more flat and fake than the gaming engine where objects have death and physics can be manipulated.
Contrast is an animated, virtual reality documentary where the viewer is brought into the worlds of two color-blind artists. Gabe and Jake experience the world from a limited color perspective yet are able to create powerful and beautiful art. Contrast addresses the idea of turning something that others may consider a handicap into something that differentiates these artists from others, giving the viewer a unique way of seeing the world.
AR Tarot provides an easy answer for the questions we ask Tarot. When asking a simple yes or no question to the Tarot cards beginners are often confronted with a lack of knowledge of what the cards mean. I used AR to overlay Gifs and audio that makes their answers clear. Made with Unity and Vuforia for Android.
In 1968 the world was undergoing massive change politically and culturally. It was a year that was filled with rage, protest and milestones. There was a communal feeling that swept over the world and inspired revolt.
While it is known as a year of protest many people in our generation don’t know enough about the specific protests that occurred. We wanted to bring attention to these individual protests that had wide reaching ramifications.
We narrowed down our focus to two protests that occurred in 1968: The Miss America Protest in Atlantic City, NJ and the Tlatelolco Massacre in Mexico City. We interviewed various participants of the protests and used their stories as a guide for AR Experiences.
For the Mexico City piece we superimposed archival footage on the location and it is location based. The Miss America piece was designed to be experienced anywhere, bringing the boardwalk to you.
